If you are here for some sappy love story, you’ve come to the wrong place. I am the queen of mystery, horror, and sci-fi. Sorry, not sorry. I know that there are more like me who are interested in watching different types of movies but don’t really know where to start. Don’t worry, I’ve got you. Here are the best Korean movies without romance on Netflix. I’ve seen them all so hopefully it will help.
Train to Busan
Genre: Action/Horror
Main Cast: Gong Yoo, Jung Yu Mi, Ma Dong Seok, Kim Soo Ahn, Kim Eui Sung
I’m starting this list off with my favorite of the bunch. Zombies and Gong Yoo? Yes, please. This is a great watch if you are into zombie flicks and regardless of the language barrier this might be for some, it’s a great movie. Lots of jump moments, lots of tears (no spoilers). I sincerely hope this movie somehow gets a sequel.
Tunnel
Genre: Action
Main Cast: Ha Jung Woo, Bae Doo Na, Oh Dal Su, Nam Ji Hyun
This movie was very informative. What NOT to do when traveling through tunnels. I keep a 24 pack of water in my trunk at all times because of this movie. While I don’t think Tunnel is going to win any major awards, I did enjoy going through the process of surviving an extreme length of time in horrible conditions with the main actor. Also, it took me like half the damn movie to realize that Bae Doo Na was in it. You can read my review of Tunnel here.
The Wailing
Genre: Thriller/Horror
Main Cast: Kwak Do Won, Hwang Jung Min, Chun Woo Hee, Jun Kunimura
I had to sleep with one eye open for like a week after this movie. There is something extremely creepy about horror movies involving children, don’t you think? Sometimes in horror movies, the endings can be a bit…unfinished? For example, there often seems to be storylines that aren’t completed and it can be so damn maddening. Overall, if you are looking for something that will creep you out, check this movie out. Just don’t watch it around children. You can read my review of The Wailing here.
Pandora
Genre: Action
Main Cast: Kim Nam Gil, Kim Young Ae, Kim Ju Hyeon, Jung Jin Young
My goodness, this movie was a hard watch. I love Kim Nam Gil and maybe that’s why I cried so much about this. My husband used to work in a reactor plant so maybe I thought of him during this movie. So many reasons why I cried, but overall, this story is just so damn sad. I don’t want you to not watch it because I’ve frightened you because this is a decent movie. Just make sure you have your tissues nearby.
The Chronicles of Evil
Genre: Thriller
Main Cast: Son Hyun Joo, Ma Dong Seok, Choi Daniel, Park Seo Joon
Now, this!!! Talk about twists and turns. I think I was foaming out the mouth, trying to figure out who the true culprit was and why he was doing this. Nothing scary about this movie so feel free to watch it during the daytime. Son Hyun Joo plays a heck of a detective.
Old Boy
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Main Cast: Choi Min Sik, Yoo Ji Tae, Kang Hye Jung, Ji Dae Han
Another hard watch!!! Add to the fact that I decided to watch both the original and the remake in one go. I can definitely understand why it got the awards it did but my goodness, I felt so sad after watching it. It took a while to recover so watch this movie with caution. You can read my review of Old Boy here.
The Office
Genre: Thriller
Main Cast: Go Ah Sung, Park Sung Woong, Bae Seong Woo, Kim Eui Sung
How many of you work in a place where there is 1 or 3 coworkers that just rub you the wrong way? This movie multiplies that annoyance to about 1000. I do NOT condone hurting your coworkers in any way but my goodness but after watching how some of these coworkers treat one of the interns, I might have shrieked when they got their comeuppance. You can read my review of Office here.
BlueBeard
Genre: Thriller
Main Cast: Cho Jin Woong, Shin Goo, Kim Dae Myung, Song Young Chang
Okay. This movie was okay but I feel like I missed so much when the end credits rolled. It could be because I had the flu when watching it but I really feel like the movie missed a few marks. Also definitely DO NOT EAT while watching this because there were some things that made me squirm. Trust me, if I squirm, it’s pretty bad. You can read my review of Bluebeard here.
So that’s it! Please let me know if you’ve watched any of these movies and which one you enjoyed the most. Also, did I miss any you think should be on the list? I know Netflix adds and removes movies all the time so it could be possible.
