K-pop Ticket Scammers

Conventions & Concerts Editorials

Jesus this has been sitting on my heart for a while now. If you are in the k-pop life, you know what I’m talking about already. If you have ever tried to buy tickets to a concert, you know what I’m talking about. K-pop ticket scammers. Those vile people who buy massive amounts of tickets and then turn around to sell them at five times the original price. The mess is getting out of hand and its time for companies put a stop to it.

I first noticed the problem when I tried to buy BTS tickets for their Wings Tour last year. It took HOURS for me to get three tickets. How could the concert  “sell out” in like four minutes? I wasn’t trying to go after the close seats since it was going to be fanboy’s first concert and I wasn’t sure how he was going to act. I was so blown away by the ridiculousness of it all that I took to Youtube for a rant.

Let me back up a bit. When I went to my first concert, BigBang Alive Tour in 2012, k-pop ticket scammers wasn’t this bad. Yes, it was happening but my friends and I had no problem securing VIP tickets. This was around the time Psy’s Gangnam Style was popular in the States so maybe it just wasn’t that popular yet…because my GOD. Now you can’t get tickets for anything unless you are prepared to drop a ton of money. Which many of us aren’t. Or we are and end up going into debt because of it.

It’s not just a problem in the States either. I was on Reddit and came across an article where a woman scammed people out of $37,000, selling fake tickets to a Wanna One concerts. After receiving the money, she would delete the social media accounts she was using and move on to the next victim. Thankfully she was caught and has to serve 10 months of penal servitude, 2 years of probation, and 120 hours of community service. I’m not sure if she will have to give the money back as well, but she should.

Just recently I tried my hand at getting BTS tickets for myself and the fanboy. You all know what a shit show that was. Needless to say I wasn’t successful. I keep checking back on Ticketmaster and StubHub to see if prices have been going down but, not surprisingly, they haven’t.

Fans have been very vocal with complaining about the ticket scammers but as of this writing, I haven’t seen any improvements or changes to keep this from happening. I know it would be impossible for ticket companies to be able to keep sales 100% free of bots and people trying to sell tickets at sky-high prices but right now it seems as if they aren’t even trying to correct anything. They seem to have a sort of “oh well too bad” attitude and frankly, I’m over it.

I’m going to continue to try for the tickets that I want for the concerts I want but if I don’t get them, I’m not going to worry about it. I refuse to pay more then what is necessary. What I foresee is people getting fed up like I am and just not go to the concerts. Entertainment companies aren’t going to want their idols performing to empty arenas so they might stop coming as often. Maybe then ticket companies here will do more in stopping these ridiculous k-pop ticket scammers.

What has been your experience with them?
