Review:
White came out in 2011 and stars May Doni, Choi Ara, Jin Se-yeon and Eun-Jung from T-ara. I was going through the newly discovered Korean Dark Thrillers genre on Netflix and thought it looked interesting. The synopsis seemed to pique my curiousity.
Girl group Pink Dolls are virtually unknown, overshadowed by other more popular idols. However, after covering the mysterious song “WHITE” for their second album, they start to gain popularity.
Wow. I’ve been watching more K-movies and I’ve seen to have fallen into the horror/thriller/drama trap. I laugh at the ridiculousness of the monster in Sector 7. The pure craziness of the Housemaid and the epic awesomeness of Ahjussi ( I should probably review these movies too).
Anywho, let’s just say that I was blissfully blank when it came to expectations of this movie. And you know what? I liked it. Yes it was a bit ridiculous with the whole “horror” thing. The creepy ghost who does that walking thing from the Ring (I admit I did jump 1 time).
Sooooo here’s why I enjoyed the movie. It’s about a disliked female kpop group, Pink Dolls. They have no fans and barely like each other. They move into an old studio to try to work on a new album. One of the girls (played by Eun-jung) finds a tape with the word “White” on it. When she plays it, there is only one song on it.
No one knows who the song belonged to so their manager decides for the group to cover the song. They do and *bam* instant success. Creepy things start happening when the girls start fighting for the main spot of the song. People aren’t dying (yet) but the group goes from 4 to 1. And they get “removed” ala Final Destination style.
The movie is predictable (at least for me because I watch A LOT of horror movies) but I liked the music. I liked that May Doni is still doing something and of course I am a predisaster T-ARA fan.
The song was so catchy that I had to take to twitter to make sure I wasn’t in danger of getting sucked into the curse surrounding the song. Since there are some actual singers (songstresses?) in the movie, I’m going to say that all the singing you here is legit but you never can be too sure when it comes to movie magic.
So what’s the final verdict? If you have 2 hours to spare, watch it. You aren’t going to really learn anything but its a good way to pass the time. Although after watching it, and knowing the whole T-ARA thing (perhaps this was foreshadowing for the group) it does make me wonder if a lot of groups are like this behind the scenes (not the whole ghost trying to kill you thing but the other stuff).
Check out the trailer below and let me know on twitter and/or in the comments on whether or not you’ve seen White and if you like it.
