So thank you to my dear Kdrama addict for the hookup. Okay here’s the rundown.
Jae-hyuk (played by Kim Myung-Min) is a personal assistant to some shmuckity-shmuk after going broke following his brother’s stock market advice. He used to be a chemistry professor or something (the subs were a bit iffy with this movie). Somehow some…organisms get into a popular river where hundreds of people went every day to swim. They ingest these things and start eating uncontrollably. The things live off of water so when they reach their maturity stage they need to leave to reproduce in the water. Are you following me? Great. SO the human host needs to drink a lot of water in order to survive because These things need water. No matter how much you drink, it’s not enough. The organism somehow controls your body and forces you to go to the nearest water (toilet, shower, fountain, whatever) where you drown yourself, causing these things to be able to escape and procreate to start the whole process over again.
*pause while I drink some water*
I knew the acting itself wsn’t going to be spectacular. That isn’t why I wanted to watch the movie. Kim Myung-min played a believable father who would go to the end of the earth and beyond to try to save his family.
My only issue with his character was that there were several instances where he could have gotten the drug that cured this thing and he eff’d up royally. I mean I saw it coming a mile away yet he kept doing the same stupid shit. 3 times I counted before I had to remind myself this was just a movie. When you are in that situation you need to let yourself know that hey, I’m saving my family first, then the others. But whatevs.
I think the main reason why I wanted to watch this was because of the scientific aspects. How the organism gets into the body, whether or not its contagious, how it feeds off the human… this thing is basically a tape worm on steroids. Also I can’t imagine being forced to your own death, by drowning, by your body. Amazing to me.
So if you have some time, check it out. Not for the acting (though it wasn’t necessarily terrible) but if you are into sci-fi like I am. And make sure you have some water nearby because you are going to get thirsty. Trust me.
