I absolutely adored Rooftop Prince! For some reason I have a hard time sticking with historical dramas so I was hesitant to start it but once I did, woozers! For starters, its not a typical historical drama. The prince, Lee Gak, has just found out his beloved wife has been murdered. While doing some detective work of his own, he and his associates (the Joseon Power Rangers) are ambushed. Through k-drama magic, they somehow escape through a time slip (a la Dr. Jin) and wind up in present day, sitting in Park Ha’s house.
Park Ha has had a tough life. Her step-sister, Se Na (hated her character, loved her fashion sense), was so jealous of her that she would do whatever she could to get her in trouble (fake shoplighting, forced running away, whatever). Se Na works for Yong Tae Yong’s grandmother and is sleeping with having secret liasons with Yong Tae Mu, Tae Yong’s evil cousin.

Throughout the drama Se Na and Tae Mu do whatever they can, including murder, in order to take control of the Yong family business and fortune. I felt so bad for Park Ha whenever they messed with her, though she didn’t act exactly like the typical kdrama female lead (those slapping and water throwing scenes for intense). Now here is where more kdrama magic is sprinkled around and be forewarned of spoilers. Tae Mu gets into a fight (sort of) with Tae Yong. Tae Yong is thrown overboard of his boat and Tae Mu acts like he has no idea what happend. Somehow Tae Mu doesn’t die but is in the coma. While all of this is going on, Lee Gak and the Joseon Power Rangers get whisked into Park Ha’s house. The prince realizes that Se Na is the reincarnation of his princess and decides to stick around to try and find out who killed her. I know it sounds far fetched but that’s kdramas for you.

The combination of hilarity and sadness that ensues is ridiculous, but I like it! The prince and his crew trying to fit in with current times had me in stitches (how do you confuse an elevator with ah changing room). The way the prince drinks soju was so cute, even I had to try it. In the end the prince realizes his princess wasn’t what he thought she was and falls in love with Park Ha. This leads to him figuring out what really happened to his princess back in the Joseon period.

All in all I think this was a really great drama and it ALMOST (almost) made it into my top 5. As a matter of fact, the OST made it into my top kdrama soundtracks. I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it yet. You can check it out on Dramafever or Viki if you are Stateside, or Kimchidramas if they aren’t available in your country.
Still can’t decide to watch or not? Then check out the trailer below and let me know in the comments what you think of it.
